Girl, we get it. You’ve been natural for a while now but you’re still struggling to get that perfect curl pattern, and you have no clue what to do next. Being natural can be tough, but don’t give up just yet. Here are some of the most common reasons why women struggle with their natural hair.
- YOU HAVEN’T EXPERIMENTED ENOUGH
Sis, you can’t expect to master every natural hair style overnight. Take your time and master one style at a time. This way you’ll build your confidence and be more willing to try new things. My suggestion is to try one new style a month, and then work your way towards a new style the following month.
- YOU ARE FOLLOWING SOMEONE WITH HAIR THAT DOESN’T LOOK LIKE YOURS
Don’t get caught up in the hype, girl. It’s great to follow bloggers and vloggers for inspiration, but make sure you find someone with the same hair type and texture as yours. Don’t be fooled by those “magic” curl patterns, be realistic and you’ll be on the path to achieving great results.
- YOU THINK THE “RIGHT” PRODUCT WILL SOLVE ALL OF YOUR PROBLEMS
I hate to break it to you, but there’s no magic product that will solve all of your natural hair problems. It’s all about trial and error. Take note of the ingredients in the products you’re using, and find out what works best for your hair. For example, my hair responds best to products with shea butter and not so much to glycerin. So, when testing out new products, I make sure to pay attention to where glycerin lists on the label. And hey, using products from different lines can produce some amazing results.
- YOU HAVEN’T VISITED A PROFESSIONAL STYLIST
Don’t be afraid to seek professional help, girl. There are tons of blogs and videos out there, but sometimes you just need to see a professional stylist. Make sure you do your research and find someone who understands how to properly care for natural hair. Get customer referrals, check their social media for examples of their work, and even ask for a consultation. A professional stylist can properly determine if you need a cut, protein treatment and let you know of any other damage. It’s hard to know what problem areas you have by yourself. Find a trusted stylist to help set you on the right path.
In conclusion, don’t give up on your natural hair journey just yet, sis. Experiment with different styles, find someone with a similar hair type, understand what products work best for you, and don’t be afraid to seek professional help. Let’s get those curls poppin’!
